Adding color to a neutral space.

Adding color to a neutral decor can be a great way to create a vibrant and inviting space. There are many ways to do this, such as adding colorful accent pieces like throw pillows and rugs, or painting an accent wall in a bright hue. You can also opt for artwork that brings a splash of color to the room.

Wallpapers are also a great way to add color and pattern to a room without making any permanent changes. Lastly, if you want to keep the overall look of the room neutral, you can still add pops of color with accessories like vases, lamps, and other small decor items.

Something to keep in mind when adding color to a space is the 60/30/10 rule. The 60/30/10 rule is a great way to help create balance in a space when adding color. This rule suggests that you choose a dominant color for 60% of the space, a secondary color for 30%, and an accent color for the final 10%. This distribution helps to create an aesthetically pleasing and harmonious color palette.

One advantage to keeping a room neutral and adding pops of color, is you can easily change the colors out seasonally or as you please. By simply swapping the small items of color you can change the space with minimal effort. We have a whole blog on color theory that you can check out, but here are a few things to keep in mind when adding color to your space.

Ideally a neutral space will work with any color, but because even neutral hues like white, grey, and brown can have undertones like blue, pink, yellow, or green etc. it's a good idea to know your basic color theory. For example when you add a color that is a complimentary color to the undertone of your neutral, it can cause that undertone to be more noticeable. Let's say you have a taupe wall that has lots of yellow undertones, by adding purple, its complementary color, the taupe will then appear to be even more yellow.

By placing yellow next to purple, they both appear brighter.

In this same example if you have yellow undertones selecting analogous colors will keep that taupe looking more neutral. So in this instance you would want to select either a yellow, green, or orange pop of color.

However, chances are, if you are keeping with the 60/30/10 rule that 10 percent pop shouldn't be enough to throw off the entire look of the space.

As always, if you are wanting to add a pop of color to your space, but feeling stuck and need some help, we would be more than happy to assist you.
