Design 101

It can be challenging to get a design game plan together with so many ideas, inspirations, and information circulating the internet!

Whether you are moving into a new place or want to revamp an existing space, here at Joyspace Austin we have created a helpful guide to get your ideas out of dreamy-Pinterest-land and into your home!

So, we have decided to write a few tips to get you started! Sort of an Interior Design 101!

Remember, your space is a true reflection of YOU so anything goes if it makes you happy.

Artwork is a great way to start your refresh and complement the colors

1. Start with Artwork

You have to have a starting point, but WHAT that is can vary!

For most of our clients, we suggest beginning with a piece of artwork because wall art is such a statement. It is one of the most impactful pieces of a room design and is a very personal reflection of who they are.

If you don't have something or need a starting point to begin looking, we suggest Society6 (which has a plethora of styles and price points), Home Goods, Overstock, World Market, or a good 'ole DIY!

By having a splash of color in your room you add some ‘pop’

2. The 60/30/10 Rule

This is a big one because it's an Interior Design rule on how to work a color palette into a space.

It goes like this:

  • 60% of your room should be the Dominant color

  • 30% should be the Accent color

  • 10% should be the tiny sprinkle of a "Pop" color.

In the example above, we would consider 60% to be blue, because it's the dominant furniture piece in the room.

For the 30%, you want to choose a complementary color that works well with your primary color, which in this case was the white walls and cream-colored rug + curtains.

Lastly, we added a nice "pop" color with orange-hued pillows for our 10% finish.

Curtains can enhance a space and help with lighting

3. Don't Overlook Curtains

Curtains make any room polished! They add a softness that completes any space and it is a great way to incorporate pattern, color, and texture into your design.

We recommend choosing these once your color palette artwork + color palette are finalized so you can be sure they tie in the other design elements in the space BUT every now and then, curtains can be a great inspiration piece. Just remember, the height you hang them and what rod you use can be just as important as the accessories themselves.

All in all, you want to be sure that you are choosing things that excite you and bring you joy. Utilizing these tips can help you create a game plan and find your joy, but in the event you feel stuck and need support, we'd love to help you create your happy home!
